Hi guys,
I have to make a presentation to promote visual management in an organization. So, basically there is one area in the organization that is realy developed in using visual managemnt, daily/weekly huddles and multi skilling. I'm heading their way to better understand the setting and take some pictures. The presentarion will be delivered in a 1 day Lean Thinking workshop to try to promote the benefits of using those tools in a real-life example from the organization, and also to kind of create a bit of awareness of the mechanisms that are behind that area's performance.
The question is what structure (agenda) of the presentation would you recommend to have the best results?
Hi Adrian,
I can advise you to split the presentation into 2 parts:
Part 1- Visual Management
You will need to explain what is the main idea for the visual management, i.e. to make the workplace a more effective one (easily accessible and user-friendly information for the team).
Standards, methods, abnormal conditions, actions and communications are part of the content of the visual management that is implemented.
There are 3 main types of Visual Management:
1. Visual Displays - RedAmberGreen (RAG) status always plays a big role in the visual displays, so it is definitely worth mentioning it.
2. Visual Controls - mistake-proofing is one of the most common ones. Examples for it are Templates, Tool boards, Checklists.
3. Visual Metrics- that is everything that plays a crucial role in the output, i.e. Product Profitability, Rework, Quality, Work in Progress backlog, Variability, Net profit/ Revenue etc.
Part 2 - Visual tools
1. Standard process flow - try to include all the elements like: Materials, Machines (software), Methods, People, Measurements. This can be shown as a standard process or MIFA/ Value-stream map.
2. Takt time and cycle time - that is naturally connected to the former step.
3. A3 storyboard- the main idea is to focus the attention on the problem solving.
(Mirel Baila is giving a really good explanation of how to structure it)
4. One-point lesson - a good tool is 4L (Learnt, Liked, Lacked, Longed for) when analysing a team project.
5. Activity board- visual scorecard of the team's progress. It keeps everybody's attention and the information is clear. Quality- Delivery-Cost is a very good rule to follow when creating an activity board.
6. Kanban board- generally follows the task from the pipeline through the work in progress till the completed work. I really like Trello as an online tool for Kanban. I can also recommend kanbinize.com.
7. Red-tagging - is used for the things that need to be recycled, sold, relocated. The rule to sort is simple: no longer needed, out of place and it belongs somewhere else, needed to do the work.
At the end of the day, the main principle where the visual management falls is 5S- Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain.
I hope that helps and good luck with the presentation and the actual implementation afterwards.
