References are important and customers actually call your references.
If you have had previous consulting jobs customers what to know the challenges and the outcome of these consulting jobs.
Customers look for what education a consultant has: Ph.D, Master's Degree, or Bachelors degree: where did theConsultant go to school?
What certifications does the consultant have: ie, CPM: Certified Purchasing Manager or CPIM: Certified in Production Inventory Management.
If it is a Lean Consultant: does he or she have a Master Black Belt, Black Belt, Yellow, or White Belt?
The actual interview is critical: how does the consultant answer keyl questions

Definitely that is a question that I have asked myself as well.
I would split in two types of consultants to be hired depending on the organization`s scale:
1. For SME and start-ups:
- references from previous satisfied organizations where the consultant got an proven successful impact in solving same or similar cases.
- to recognize the consultant as someone that you can communicate easily and effectively with. Nobody wants to hire someone that she/he is verified to speak with even though she/he got lots of diplomas and courses passed.
- mouth to mouth recommendation.
2. For large companies - I am more likely to join Chuck`s statement.
Depending on the reason you are rising the question, I can put more notes from experience here.
